Ryan Garcia apologized on social media after using racial slurs against Black people and disparaging Muslims. The 25-year-old boxer, expelled by the World Boxing Council, announced plans to enter rehab, citing struggles with substance abuse. Despite his apology, Garcia later defended his remarks, claiming, “a black man can be racist” and referencing common use of racial slurs in certain communities. He also noted other fighters had made racist comments without facing WBC discipline.
Previously, Garcia was suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission and had his April 20 victory over Devin Haney declared a no-contest due to positive performance-enhancing drug tests. Concerns about Garcia’s behavior, both online and offline, arose before the Haney fight, including conspiracy theories and cries for help, which he later dismissed.
In June, Garcia was arrested for causing $15,000 in damages at a Beverly Hills hotel, attributed to personal stress over his mother’s health. Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, condemned Garcia’s actions, emphasizing the need for Garcia to earn back trust and respect while offering support during his rehabilitation.
