HOT STUFF – DONNA SUMMER
Growing up in New York, as a child in the 70’s I was too young and unaware of the punk & new wave movement that was happening in NYC. None of it existed on the radio or in my parents record collection. By the time disco hit, I was already into music and had my first guitar at age 4.
My club was the roller rink. We would go roller skating every Saturday and Sunday after church.
My favorite song to skate to was Hot Stuff by Donna Summer. She was the Disco Queen and this song lived up to its title. I wore this 45 out, but what knocked me out the most was the guitar solo. It literally sounded like the guitar was ON FIRE! Played by none other than JEFF “SKUNK” BAXTER. He came out swinging on this one and kept punching until he knocked us all out! The sound of his guitar, those subtle double stops and, of course that descending line that makes you feel like you’re free fallin’, then winding down and coming in for a landing on a G chord. It perfectly matched the energy and intensity of this massive hit song!
I always wanted to learn this one. Well, I finally did…
