#shorts-Who was Nefertiti? A brief historical overview of the life of the Egyptian Pharaonic
Nefertiti was one of the most famous and influential queens of ancient Egypt. She was the great royal wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, who ruled from c. 1353 to 1336 BC or 1351 to 1334 BC. Together, they changed the state religion of Egypt from polytheism to monotheism, worshipping only one god, the sun disk Aten. They also built a new capital city, Akhetaton (Amarna), where they promoted art and culture.
Nefertiti’s origin is uncertain, but some scholars believe that she was the daughter of Ay, a courtier who later became pharaoh, and his wife Iuy. She had a younger sister named Mutnodjmet. Nefertiti married Akhenaten when he was still known as Amenhotep IV, and bore him six daughters, two of whom became queens of Egypt.
Nefertiti was not only a beautiful and beloved wife, but also a powerful and influential co-ruler. She participated in religious ceremonies, smote Egypt’s enemies, and wore a distinctive blue crown. She was often depicted alongside her husband and children in naturalistic and intimate scenes. Her name means “the beautiful one has come” or “a beautiful woman has come”.
Nefertiti’s fate after Akhenaten’s death is unknown. Some scholars suggest that she may have briefly ruled as pharaoh under the name Neferneferuaten, before Tutankhamun, her son-in-law or nephew, took the throne. Others argue that she died or was banished before Akhenaten’s death. Her tomb has not been conclusively identified, although some clues point to a possible location in the Valley of the Kings.
Nefertiti’s legacy lives on through her stunning bust, which was discovered in 1912 by German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt in the workshop of sculptor Thutmose at Amarna. The bust is now in the Neues Museum in Berlin, and is one of the most copied and admired works of ancient Egyptian art. Nefertiti remains a symbol of beauty, power, and mystery for many people today.
