In this video Salvatore Vinciguerra travels to the Lake Kissimmee State Park in Lake Wales, Florida. Salvatore first shares with you the history of the park and then the RV campsites, and amenities that the park has to offer.
Originally used by early europeans exploring Florida in the 1500's, this land was utilized during the 3rd Seminole War, Fort Gardiner was built nearby as a temporary fort. After the war was over the land was used for timber and turpentine operations. During the American Civil War the area was used for raising cattle that were shipped to the Confederate Army or traded with Cuba for supplies. After the Civil War the land was continued to be used for raising cattle and the land was then purchased by the state of Florida in 1969 and turned into the a park open to the public by 1977.
The Lake Kissimmee State Park is located in central Florida and is a great place for boating, fishing, hiking, equestrian horse riding, star gazing and much more. In addition to the primitive, equestrian, youth, and RV campsites, don't forget to check out the new glamping care-free experience of the luxury pioneer tents.
The RV camping area offers 60 campsites with electricity and water, a picnic table and a fire ring. These sites can hold Recreational Vehicles up to 55' in length. Most RV sites are paved and include a hiking path out to the marina area. Don't forget to bring you boat as Lake Kissimmee provides great access to the other surrounding and connecting lakes: Tiger Lake and Lake Rosalie.
Wildlife enthusiasts will be able to encounter white tailed deer in their campsites and surrounding areas. Other animals include Florida scrub jays, Sherman fox squirrels, Gopher tortoises, wild turkey, bobcats and the gray fox. Birding in this area may have you view some of Florida's native species such as the bald eagle, snail kite, sandhill crane and crested caracara.
Exploring the floodplain marshes to flatwoods and shady hammocks will have you experience 12 distinct natural communities that hold over 30 listed species of flora and fauna. The park's botanical collection include, mosses, butterfly orchids, sawgrass, cutthroat grass, fetterbush and gallberry with expansive, colorful field of lotus and pickerelweed.
