Watch the "Getting to Root Causes of Poverty Through Systems-Informed Advocacy" workshop presentation from the 2021 Summit on Poverty: Realities, Reflections, & Recovery: Surviving & Thriving 2020 & Beyond.
Presented by:
Frank Martinelli, Center for Public Skills Training, Senior Consultant
Sometimes, in our efforts to uncover root causes of poverty that we seek to address, we learn that there are existing laws, regulations or policies that hurt the people we serve. We can then take action through advocacy to change or eliminate such laws, regulations and policies thereby removing the causes of conditions that lead to poverty and trauma. This session will be especially useful to nonprofits that are not currently engaged in advocacy and seek credible information on this critical topic.
This workshop discusses:
What is advocacy and what the law allows tax-exempt nonprofits to do
Why nonprofits need to engage in such advocacy efforts
Barriers to nonprofit advocacy and how to address them
Understanding the difference between transactional change and transformational change as the key to systems-informed advocacy
Tools for root cause analysis of community problems
The importance of board involvement in advocacy
Overview of organizations and resources that can help leaders move forward
The session will introduce tools, resources and guidance on how to lay the groundwork for systems-informed advocacy to address root causes of poverty.
The 2021 Summit on Poverty examined evidence-based strategies and the latest tools for exposing and disrupting the experience of poverty. The Summit on Poverty brought people together virtually and in-person to address barriers that impact people in vulnerable communities.
