Alexander More, Assistant Research Professor at the Climate Change Institute and Harvard University, explains how the demand for beef is changing the landscape in Brazil. Brazil is the largest exporter and producer of beef in the world.
In 2018, the country exported approximately $6.7 billion worth of beef. Since that same year, there's also been an 80% increase in deforestation. Researchers say there is a tipping point at which the Amazon could turn into dry savanna once a certain amount of the forest is gone.
About a forth of planet-warming greenhouse gases produced by humans each year is caused by the world's food system. Meat and dairy have the largest impact, accounting for nearly 14.5% each year. More says policy change and education about beef's environmental effects can help provide solutions to deforestation and fires in the Amazon.
