Wednesday April 04, 2018 at 2:15PM (Hawaii Standard Time)
Cultural storytelling of the history of Hawaii’s official instrument, the ukulele, including evolution from rhythm accompaniment to solo instrument; learning the unique method of strumming down and forming easy chords; and applying those techniques to playing the traditional Hawaiian song “Hawaii Aloha” that is sung to close public events in Hawaii. Mele's arrangement for “Hawaii Aloha” has 5-chords in the key of C and uses the Morse Code Strum with amen ending. The song will be sung in the Hawaiian language. Song "Hawaii Aloha" will be distributed via email on the same day prior to lesson starts.

Review “Hawaii Aloha” and lessons learned. Students will learn to play the popular Hapa Haole song (Hawaiian style music with English words) “On the Beach at Waikiki,” the song that first excited people to Hawaiian music in 1915 and launched a new genre of music. Mele's arrangement for “On The Beach at Waikiki” has 7-chords in the keys of C and F and uses the Hum Ding-Ah Strum with shave and a haircut ending. Learn new chords, new strum, and new ending pattern. Song "On the Beach at Waikiki" will be distributed via email on the same day prior to lesson starts.

Review “Hawaii Aloha,” “On the Beach at Waikiki” and lessons learned. Students will learn to play the popular song “Yellow Bird” (local style “Mynah Bird” to a calypso classic) that was made popular by a vibraphone player in Hawaii in the 1960s. Mele's arrangement for “Yellow Bird” has 7-chords in the key of C and uses the Latin Strum with cha cha cha ending. Learn new chords including second position C, new strum, and new ending pattern. Song "Yellow Bird" will be distributed via email on the same day prior to lesson starts.
Live lesson 4 - 45 mins
Wednesday April 25, 2018 at 2:15PM (Hawaii Standard Time)
Review all three songs and lessons learned. Students get a demonstration of what’s next in their pursuit of having fun playing the ukulele, and adapting what they learned to their favorite songs so they sound better.
Minimum Requirement to Participate:
1. A computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone compatible with our live integration software already installed.
2. A reliable internet connection, and a pair of earbud or headphone.
3. A web camera and microphone to see and talk with each other.
4. A Hawaiian guitar ukulele.
Expected Outcome:
1. Students will have fun during the Hawaiian cultural and musical experience learning something from Native Hawaiian Mele Fong, with over 50 years playing the ukulele, Hawaii’s official instrument, and who teaches a unique method of forming ukulele chord shapes with minimal muscle strain and strumming styles taught by no one else.
2. Students will tune their ukulele to standard G, C, E, A tuning, and can play the chords of C, F, and G7 confidently.
3. Students will be able to play 3 Hawaiian folk songs (in Hawaiian language and in English) confidently and independently.
This series will be conducted in English.
Mele Fong, aka Ukulele Mele is a professional singer, song arranger, and master of multiple strumming styles for the ukulele. Mele also plays the piano and guitar, dances hula, and teaches Hawaiian history. She is Native Hawaiian and teaches how to play ukulele, Hawaii’s official instrument, from Hawaii. Mele has over 50 years experience singing and playing the ukulele and entertaining worldwide with aloha. She is an experienced educator with a unique method for forming ukulele chords with minimal muscle strain and strumming patterns taught by no one else.
