Arizona is among a number of U.S. states where selling marijuana is legal, with voters approving a legalization initiative in 2020.
Alicia Deals is one of 26 people to have won a so-called 'Social Equity License' in a lottery drawing, and she is set to open her own marijuana dispensary, becoming the first African American in Arizona to do so by using a social equity license.
There is a degree of irony to her story, as she is profiting from the sale of marijuana, even as her father is serving an 18-year prison sentence for selling marijuana, at a time when such sales were illegal.
