A Summit to Seashore Birding Adventures visit to the New Forest produced great views of the elusive Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. This wonderful bird frequents areas with mature woodland. This is the smallest of the three breeding woodpecker, here in the UK, the others being Great Spotted Woodpecker and Green Woodpecker. Early spring is a good time to go looking for them while there are less leaves on the trees. Once the leaves return and the birds have finished their courtship and territorial displays they become quiet and spend most of their time in the canopy and become very difficult to see. They are still doing well in mainland Europe, but have declined here in the UK.
