Prof Lawrie hails from St. Andrews, studied medicine in Aberdeen and, after a sojourn in Glasgow, has worked in Edinburgh for more than thirty years.
He completed basic psychiatric training at the Royal Edinburgh hospital.
Following six months as a Wellcome Research Fellow, he was Lecturer and then Senior Clinical Research fellow/Reader in the Department of Psychiatry in Edinburgh. As an honorary consultant psychiatrist with NHS Lothian he works as a general adult psychiatrist in south-west Edinburgh.
As an academic ,his research is primarily focussed on understanding and treating schizophrenia. Stephen is also enthusiastic about public engagement, training, clinical and evidence-based psychiatry.
