We had the very rare opportunity to visit and film in a garment factory in Bangladesh. All factories we saw had military-style security guards, high walls, barbwires and next to the “No Child Labour”- a “Photos Strictly Prohibited”-sign.
Thanks to a friend from Dhaka, we were shown around by all department managers who explained us every step: Knitting, inspecting, dyeing, drying, cutting, sewing, ironing, packing.
Chances are high that you are wearing clothes that were made in Bangladesh as it’s the world’s second largest garment producer. Garments make up 82% of the country’s manufactured exports and employ over 4.2 million people.
We visited a medium-sized factory with about 300 employees who work in 12 hours shifts. Most of the workers make around 100-300 USD per month based on their skills and experience. Managers make around 400-600 USD per month. Bangladesh’s salaries for textile workers are (among) the lowest globally.
Fast fashion totally rocks 🤦♂️
At the same time, we were surprised how clean and well-developed the factory looked and that overall work conditions looked quite okay.
