The next David v. Goliath battle comes to us by way of the Vietnam War. The Battle of Long Tan took place on August 8, 1966 in the middle of a rubber plantation. D Company, of the Australian Army made up of only 108 men found them surrounded by over 2,500 Vietcong forces.
It all began after the Australian forward base at Nui Dat came under heavy artillery attack from the Vietcong. The Australians didn’t particularly care for the unwelcome mortar attacks and so understandably dispatched a few companies to find the location of the besieging artillery and neutralize the annoyance. The last company to be sent out on patrol was D Company, they failed to find the artillery position however instead they came across an entire Vietcong infantry regiment who were lying in wait.
The Vietcong were heavily armed, and tore into D Company as they patrolled through the rubber trees. Monsoon rains and the young short rubber trees obscured visibility for D Company as they struggled to pinpoint their attackers location, whilst digging into a somewhat defensible position. One of the retreating Australian platoons accidentally came upon the flank of a Vietcong force, which had been moving into position to assault D Company. The Australians opened fire inflicting heavy casualties and forcing the enemy to beat a hasty retreat. The 108 men of D Company held out for hours in shallow foxholes, shooting at an enemy they could barely see. Heavy Australian artillery support was monumental in helping them survive the continuous wave after wave of Vietcong attacks. The situation became so dire that at one point after many hours of fighting, D Company was down to its last 100 rounds. Finally a RAAF helicopter finally broke official orders and flew through the monsoon and heavy enemy fire to deliver much needed ammunition to the besieged Aussies.
After around 5 hours of non-stop fighting, reinforcements arrived in the form of A Company, 6 RAR, comprising of several armoured personnel carriers. They broke through the encircling Vietcong and forced them to abandon their siege and beat a hasty retreat.
The following few days found the Australian forces discovering hundreds of Vietcong corpses, it was then that it became clear the heavy defeat that D Company had inflicted upon the Vietcong. The Australians suffered 18 casualties and 24 wounded, whilst the Vietcong are estimated to have lost 245 men with a further 350 being wounded.
