Bolesław Mierzejewski z tow. fortepianu: prof. Jakób Hirszfeld (with piano accompaniment by prof. Jakob Hirszfeld) – W zacisznej małej kawiarence [In einer kleinen Konditorei; In a Little Coffee Shop] Tango (F.Raymond – Ortym), Parlophon 1929 (Polish)
NOTE: Bolesław MIERZEJEWSKI (b. 1887 in Warszawa, Poland – d. 1980 in Katowice, Poland) Polish tenor and operetta singer. Born to a family of Polish impoverished nobility, Mierzejewski in his youth attended several semi-amateurish theatre circles, until he was noticed and engaged in the late 1910s by the renowned Theatre “Rozmaitości” in Warsaw (The Varietes) and after that, by another popular Warsaw stage Teatr Mały (The Minute Theatre). That was the beginning of his numerous engagements at various stages throughout Poland: in Warsaw, Cracow, Poznań, Bydgoszcz, Lwów. Due to his excellent posture he became very popular in the paramour roles, especially in the memorable romantic duet he made with Lucyna Messal – the Number One vedette of Polish vaudeville and operetta in pre-Jazz era. He was also a film star, and the role which made him immortal in the history of Polish cinema was Esquire Michorowski in Polish film romance of all times: “Trędowata” (The Leprous Girl, 1926). In the 1930s, when his popularity started to wane, Mierzejewski appeared also on stages of the cabarets and revue theatres, including Morskie Oko or Banda, singing popular hits and occasionally waxing them.
This recording of the huge international hit “In einer kleinen Conditorei” (In a Little Coffee Shop) belongs to these rarest gems. During the 2nd WW, Mierzejewski worked as a café waiter and took active part in the tragic Warsaw Uprising of August-October 1944. After the war, facing the loss of all his life assets in the demolished city, Mierzejewski moved out to Katowice, the city located in Silesia, in the southern part of Poland - where in 1980 he died in oblivion, yet still giving occasional appearances on stage of the Silesian Theatre. After his death, the valuable book of his memoirs entitled “My Marathon with Melpomena” was published in 1980. Bolesław Mierzejewski was buried in the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw.
