(14 Oct 2021) Tens of thousands of people attended a protest rally in the Georgian capital Tbilisi in support of imprisoned ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili on Thursday.
Opposition supporters gathered in the capital from various parts of the country to demand release of Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike since his arrest.
Saakashvili was arrested on 1 October on returning to the country ahead of municipal elections to galvanise support for the opposition.
Saakashvili and his supporters believe that the charges are politically motivated.
Supporters refer to him as a political prisoner.
Meanwhile, the opposition is preparing for a run-off in municipal elections in major cities scheduled for 30 October.
Winning run-off rounds "will dramatically change the picture in the country," said opposition leader Gigi Ugulava.
