You Can’t Be True, Dear (Griffin-Otten-Ebeler-Cotton) by Ken Griffin at the Organ, vocal by Jerry Wayne (Rondo 228)
Ken Griffin’s solo Hammond organ recordings were long an inescapable presence at many a roller rink, ice skating rink, and carnival merry-go-round. His national reputation skyrocketed in 1948 with not one, but two best-selling recordings of “You Can’t Be True, Dear” (originally a 1935 German waltz “Du Kannst Nicht Treu Sein”). See also the post of Griffin’s earlier instrumental version, recorded in late 1947, issued on Rondo #128, and reaching #2 on Billboard’s sales and jukebox charts.
But here we have the other Griffin release, produced in early 1948, which featured vocalist Jerry Wayne simply singing a set of lyrics (and whistling) over a playback of Griffin’s instrumental recording...though it’s pitched a half-note higher. This vocal overdub version (Rondo #228) was first to catch on and spent seven weeks atop the national jukebox charts before the instrumental took off and shared some time with it in the top-10. A cappella vocals of “You Can’t Be True, Dear” by both Dick Haymes and The Sportsmen are also included in the 1948 collection, as is the fully-orchestrated import version by England’s Vera Lynn.
