Music by Luca Tropea.
The purpose of this electroacoustic composition is to depict a shipwreck environment aurally by means of blending orchestral and electronic sounds. It was originally inspired by Norwegian painter Knud Baade’s 1845 artwork, "Shipwreck", which I felt was ripe for musical exploration. The painting was used as a foundation from which to construct an imaginary narrative concerning a character finding himself stuck in this desolate environment. This plot then informed the structure of my piece. It consists of three main sections:
Section 1: 0:00 - Character awakes in the shipwreck aftermath, alone in the dark and oppressive atmosphere.
Section 2: 3:36 - Remnants of the ship begin to break apart, increasing the danger and intensity of the situation.
Section 3: 6:30 - Light of dawn pierces the clouds to give a sense of hope of rescue, but ultimately to no avail.
Like much of my music, I used recurring motifs to represent objects and ideas, allowing the storyline to be followed clearly, and to create a cohesive stand-alone piece. As previously mentioned, the aural forces at play are a blend of acoustic and electronic sounds: solo flute and clarinet, a large string orchestra, and an array of electronic and synthetic sounds, almost all of which were custom-made using Logic Pro's Alchemy synthesiser. These electronic components fall at diverse points across the spectrum between pure music and sound design, and give the piece a unique atmosphere and colour.
