The earlier, 10th-generation Civic has been around since 2016 and it's been immensely popular. Honda says more customers have bought the current Civic than any other car on the market over the last four years and that it's been the best selling car in retail sales over last four years, with a 25% share of the market in 2019.
With that success at its back, Honda is getting ready to debut the new version's redesign and this prototype Honda Civic sedan gives you a good idea of what the new Civic will look like. As you can see from our first look, Honda worked hard to evolve the look of the Civic for 2022. As popular as the previous model was, there were some who didn’t like all the angles and shapes. Those complaints have largely been put to rest with this new version. It’s a clean, mature look that still maintains a degree of sportiness that Civics are known for.
Overall, the new Civic will be a little longer than its predecessor and its wheelbase is up a bit too. The car's width and height are about the same as the previous Civic. Interior space and trunk space are about the same on the 2022 Civic as the earlier version. Designers were able to move the car's A-Pillar (which frames the windshield) back by about two inches, giving the car a more rear-wheel-drive profile, despite still being front-wheel-drive.
This 11th-generation compact car will carry over most of the current body styles and trims. That includes the sedan and hatchback models, the sport-tuned Civic Si, and the driver's favorite Type R; sorry coupe fans, that model has been discontinued. Also, the orange paint you see here on this Civic prototype won't make it to production. Neither will small design elements like the darkened taillights and the upscale twin exhaust tips.
Powertrain details haven't been released but they're expected to be largely the same as the outgoing Civic. Expect a base four-cylinder engine with a little more power and efficiency than the current model. A turbo four-cylinder engine (likely 1.5-liters) will be available on upper trims and on the Si; the Type R hot hatch is also expected to get a power boost.
And good news for fans of the manual transmission: it's back for this new Civic, available on the Si sedan, the Honda Civic hatchback, and the Type R.
The simplicity Honda brought to the exterior has also spilled to the interior. A single touchscreen sits atop the dashboard, with a clean array of buttons underneath it. The driver's instrument panel is now all digital on some trims. And Honda worked in a cool honeycomb mesh design that runs the width of the dash and which hides air vents in the process. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are expected to return, as is Honda's impressive suite of active safety tech which it calls Honda Sensing.
Pricing details haven't been released but expect the 2022 Civic see a marginal price bump over the outgoing 2021 Civic.
So what do you think about the new Civic? Is it better styled than the outgoing model? Would you choose it over rivals like the Toyota Corolla, VW Jetta and Golf, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, and Mazda 3? Let us know in the comments below.
