This video was created during an artistic residency in Athens in collaboration with Sabela Peinado, a performance artist based in London. During this residency, we addressed topics related to extractivism, particularly in Elefsina, which has been the site of abusive extraction of raw materials at the expense of local farms. Elefsina is also a graveyard for abandoned ships, allowing their oil to spill into the ocean without ecological or humanitarian concerns. Local populations all know that swimming in the Gulf of Elefsina is not advisable; however, no warnings are displayed.
During this residency, we had the opportunity to integrate ourselves and participate in local life. The songs heard in the video are sung by a group of elders, being the last generation to know this language. The children's voices at the beginning are recorded on the beaches of Elefsina, where some communities swim despite the risks. The video deals with the powerlessness in the face of ecological disasters, our will to act, and the death of memory.
