The Victoria Amazonica is a water Lilly native to the Amazon Basin. It is an example of a floating plant.
Adaptations:
- Stomata on its upper surface to allow for gas exchange
- Ribs underneath to trap air, so it floats
- Spike underneath to stop animals from eating it
- Gaps in its leaf to allow water to escape
- Waxy Cuticle to make the leaf waterproof
- Air inside its stem to make it more buoyant
Catstails are an example of an emergent plant.
- Quick Growing Shoots
- Stiff and Fibourous Stem to keep upright
- Long Stem to allow it to emerge from after surface
- Hollow Stem with air pockets to keep buoyant in water
