Did you know that the trees around you could be older than the city of Pittsburgh itself? Joe Stavish, the director of education at Tree Pittsburgh, explains how to estimate the age of a tree using the tools you already have at home!

Want to try at home? Follow the steps below!
Step 1: Identify your tree and find it on your age chart.
Step 2: Measure up 54 inches from the ground. This is Diameter Breast Height, or DBH.
Step 3: Measure around the tree at this height to find the circumference, in inches.
Circumference: ___
Step 4: Divide the circumference by mathematical pi (3.14). This will give you the tree's diameter.
Circumference / 3.14 = Diameter
Step 5: Multiply the diameter by the growth rate number for the tree species from the chart below to find the approximate age of the tree.
Diameter X Growth Rate = Tree Age
