Canon has released new firmware update for Canon R3 (ver. 1.2.0) with some new exciting features that I am very happy about. The most exciting ones for my use case are:
FHD 239.76 fps
"Depth compositing" during "Focus bracketing"
Time-lapse movie recording
Enhances the performance of "Movie Digital IS"
In this film I have tested the FHD 239.76 fps feature. In wildlife filmmaking sometimes even 120fps slow motion is not enough so I really wanted for Canon to make 240fps available on Canon R3 as I knew the hardware could easily support it. I have used 240fps before on Fuji X-T4 but the quality of the footage was below average, so I was very cautious to try this one out on R3 and lowered my expectations. To my surprise the 240fps is beautiful on Canon R3, no weird artefacts or compression and it's buttery smooth and detailed. Once upscaled to 4K resolution it looks even better! This will now replace the 4K 120fps option for me.
To test this I went to my favourite coastal walk in Shelly Bay, Wellington. It's very close to my house and quite accessible. With good weather window I took that opportunity to spend some time in nature and to test the new update.
Filmed handheld on Canon EOS R3 mostly in FHD at 239.76 fps and some footage in DCI 4k at 30fps with RF 400mm f2.8, RF 100mm f2.8 Macro and RF 15-35mm f2.8 lenses. The FHD 239.76 fps footage was upscaled to 4K in Topaz Video Enhance AI, then exported in Apple ProRes 422 HQ.
