Brace yourselves for the latest innovation by the renowned convenience store chain, 7-Eleven – introducing the 7-Eleven Shop & Go, the first-ever self-checkout store in Singapore!
This exciting development was recently announced on Monday (22 Jan) by SMRT via their Facebook page. Nestled within the Esplanade Xchange, an air-conditioned underground mall inside the Esplanade MRT station, this futuristic store is part of the retail innovation hub named Hive 2.0.
Now, what sets the 7-Eleven self-checkout store apart? Well, it's completely unmanned, taking advantage of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Shoppers gain access by tapping their credit card on the barrier gantry, which charges a small fee – conveniently offset on their purchases or refunded if no items are bought.
Once inside, customers can freely browse and pick up their desired items, and upon exiting, the cost is automatically charged to their card. This seamless experience is made possible thanks to AI technology, including smart cameras and sensors strategically placed throughout the store.
But here's the catch – this innovative 7-Eleven self-checkout store might not be a permanent fixture. According to Serene Seow, the managing director of 7-Eleven, the store is slated to be around for at least six months. During this period, the company plans to gather and review feedback from users, making adjustments as needed. The current limit of five people in the store might be subject to change, and more payment options could be added if the trial is successfully scaled up.
Now, here's an exciting bonus for office workers at the South Beach Development above the station. They can take advantage of the QuikBot app to order items directly from the 7-Eleven Shop & Go. And here's the kicker – these purchases will be delivered straight to their offices by none other than robots!
For those who've been following Singapore's retail scene closely, you might recall Cheers, which opened a similar unmanned convenience store back in 2020 at Our Tampines Hub. Their concept required patrons to download the CheersSG app, add their Visa credit card, and use facial recognition technology or scan a QR code to enter the store. After grabbing their desired items, customers could simply walk out, and their cards would be charged accordingly.
