mDL stands for Mobile Driver’s License and they are an ISO standard for digital, cryptographically verifiable driver licenses. This means they can be stored on digital devices and you can use cryptography to verify their data and authorship.
mDL can be used as a form of identification. Think about the DMV in the US, they’d issue the credential, you store it on your phone and you present it either physically or in-person (current standard version) or over the web (being developed)
This would enable using mDL for: sign-in, 2FA, or recovery mechanisms as well as id-proofing.
If you want to learn more about mDL go ahead and visit mdl.me where you can play around and use the site to understand how they work!
