What is DEFENCE MECHANISM?
Defense mechanism is an unconscious psychological mechanism that reduces unpleasant feelings such as anxiety or make good things feel better for the individual.
Sigmund Freud was one of the first proponents of this construct. He stated that in order to deal with conflict and problems in life, the ego employs a range of defense mechanisms.
There is a large number of defense mechanisms, however the main ones are repression, denial, projection, displacement, regression and sublimation.
Why do we need defense mechanism?
We use defense mechanism to cope with unpleasant emotions. It is our protection from guilt or anxiety which arise because we feel threatened. Or because our superego becomes too demanding.
Defense mechanisms are not under our conscious control, therefore are natural to have.
However, when they get out of proportion things like phobias, obsessions or hysteria might develop.
Everyone has their defense mechanism, even animals.
For example bombardier beetle ejects a burning hot, acrid chemical from their posterior when they feel threatened.
While hagfish secretes a substance from 100 tiny glands located along its flanks. This substance in combination with water causes suffocation of undersea animals.
Even though defense mechanisms are used to protect ourselves, they can be harmful as well.
For example, masking a serious problem that must be addressed is a harmful defense mechanism—not only for you, but for the other person as well.
Or sometimes, when we feel threatened and bad, we can say something we didn’t mean and offend the other person we care about. That could result in damaging the relationship, which is never good.
Always remember:
Self defense is the only honorable course where there is unreadiness for self immolation.
