As the resident parents in the Driving.ca crew, Stephanie and I are the the obvious choices to review family cars of all stripes. After several of those, it gets a little monotonous, so to finish off the summer, we took a break from the practical and mundane to weigh in on a couple of cars that set our gearhead blood to boiling.
Despite being a pair of hellraisers, the two cars we collected could also work for small families if mom or dad values steering feel and a manual transmission more than cargo space. The Veloster N is Hyundai's first crack at a serious hot hatch, and it is facing off against a legend in the hot hatch world, albeit one that was not available in North America until this most recent generation: the Honda Civic Type R. I'm gonna assume you're not here for a history lesson so I'll skip the Type R's legacy and we'll dive right into the current iteration.
Both these cars are available with very limited options, the Veloster N starting at $35,049 and a $1,715 freight & PDI, the only option on 2020 models being paint. If you want any of the three colours on offer other than white (blue, black, or red), tack on an extra $200. The Civic Type R starts at a hefty ten grand more, $45,475 plus $1,670 freight & PDI, and its colour palette is similarly limited to black or white or $500 for this Boost blue paint job. There's no question that the Civic Type R's looks aren't for everyone, but this colour is fresh and really embraces its performance character.
