Fitness Myth #1 - Targeted Spot Reduction of Body Fat | High Intensity Strength Training | Body by Science Method by Dr. Doug McGuff and John Little
One of the biggest fitness myths out there is the myth of "spot reduction". It is this notion that by doing a stomach exercise we are able to target that area for more fat loss. Unfortunately, this isn't the way it works. The first chapter of Body by Science deals with the topic of genetics in great detail. We are pre-disposed to gain muscle faster in some areas AND to lose fat first (and last) in certain areas of our body.
If I focus every day on fatiguing my stomach muscles because I am under the incorrect assumption that I am going to lose more fat in the stomach then I am actually hurting myself in the long run. Instead, the solution is to focus on a good and balanced full body strength training program like high intensity strength training and Body by Science, and to target the largest muscles in the body.
What is most important to fat loss is the environment your own body is consistently in, meaning to regulate your stress, get good sleep and rest time between workouts, drink plenty of water, and have good and balanced nutrition.
