As you guys know me by now, every day I think long and hard about what needs to be done in the fashion industry to make it more sustainable.
I think we can’t go for a black and white solution; the solution won’t be perfect. There will be a bit of material innovation, a bit of a circular economy with keeping materials out of landfills for as long as possible, and some reshoring to produce closer to home. But the most important step of all will be degrowth.
Why do we need to stop buying? Or better yet, why do we need to buy less and buy better?
Think about it—we are over 7.9 billion people on Earth, and if we continue consuming clothing as we have been, consider this: every year, it's like each person throwing away roughly 32 kilograms of clothing and textiles. That’s like tossing out enough clothes to fill a small car every couple of years!
So to be pretty honest, we don’t have a choice. We will have to change our ways and champion quality over quantity.
What are your thoughts on this, are you ready to put down your credit card?
