At the end of the Cold War, the United States appeared the sole global hegemon. Two decades into the 21st century, with a resurgent China, the picture is much more complex. Should the United States embrace a multipolar world? Dr. Michael John Williams, Director of the International Relations Program at the Maxwell School for Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, says, "The United States has certainly spent a great deal of wealth maintaining a liberal democratic world order for the past 60-some years. It has also benefited tremendously from that order. There's something to be said for reducing expenditures particularly on the military to reinvest at home, although I wouldn't say that requires the United States to abdicate a global leadership role.”
