By doing some simple HEX editing during the level select screen, you can force the game to select a stage beyond the canonical 35 levels.
This video shows the Stage 71 to Stage 127 (Clearing Stage 70 looped back to Stage 1), with normal enemy Tank lineup for Stage 71 (= Stage 7) to Stage 99 (= Stage 35), Tank spawn rate continuing to accelerate until maxing out at Stage 106.
Starting Stage 72, the game started loading into other game data to spawn the Stage map - mostly bricks with spots of water, trees and concrete dotted randomely. Stage 78 is special in that it's completely empty.
What's interesting in the beyond levels are existance of "Player Clone" Tanks that give massive, non-fixed points (that glitches out the hundreds point counter), and even slower spawn rate on many levels.
My bro (Player 2) postulated that the existance of these glitch tanks is the inspiration source for Tank 1990.
