Dr. Elie Berbari, chair of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Dr. Matthew Callstrom, chair of the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, describe an experimental study that found that physical separation reduces the exposure of respiratory droplets and that 3 feet is helpful, but 6 feet separation reduces particle counts to near baseline levels. The findings strongly support the protective value and effectiveness of widespread mask use and maintaining physical distance in helping to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place. Anyone shown without a mask was recorded prior to COVID-19 or recorded in an area not designated for patient care, where social distancing and other safety protocols were followed.
