In this UPDATED tutorial you'll learn how to easily overlay an animated gif over a still image, using GIMP.

There's a lot of bonus information available in this video, such as working with Layer Groups, Optimising Layers for a lighter gif export, best practices when working with gifs inside of GIMP, and exporting all your layers as a .ora file.

No plugins are needed; you won't have to copy and paste the background under each layer.

If you have a larger gif and don't want to go through every other frame and delete them manually you can use this, go: to Filters - Python-Fu - Console.

Once the console opens, paste the following script and hit enter twice.

image = gimp.image_list()[0]

for (index,layer) in enumerate(image.layers):

image.remove_layer(layer)
