Ontario's chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore said Monday that the two first cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant that were reported in Ottawa were in two people who arrived and were initially tested in Montreal.

He said so far no further cases have been reported in the province, but there were four COVID-19 cases under investigation.

Moore also said that the province had expanded its PCR testing eligibility to people who had arrived from any of the seven southern African nations that Canada recently added new restrictions on as the Omicron variant spreads. But Moore also said officials were suggesting to the federal government to expand testing to travellers from more countries as cases of the variant of concern had been reported in places like Australia and the Netherlands.

The province reported 788 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday and three more deaths, putting the death toll just three away from reaching 10,000 over the course of the pandemic.
