【Pls look at the top comment first】Music is boundless for the world. Let the world hear Taiwan. The song is a 1980s treasure, which carries the best memory on the music scene in Taiwan. But nowadays the song is rarely mentioned and is almost forgotten among the young generation in Taiwan. For loyal fans in Taiwan and Hong Kong, it is one of the most precious aor gems which came out on this oriental land.
Except rock n roll in Japan, oriental rock sound is rarely heard and rarely known by western world. On the oriental record market, the music in Taiwan and Hong Kong are the indispensable parts, but rock music is truly a precious type for the majority. One thing can be sure that the song and the album are only known by 1980s dreamers in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Today let me show everybody the very rare aor sounds from Taiwan and let's hear the past 1980s memory which once was popular among the oriental aor fans. Don't make the amazing tunes from this album fade away from people's mind, I mean this album should never be hidden in the unknown corner with dust. For the young people in Taiwan and Hong Kong, this album should never be forgotten. It symbolized the nostalgic 1980s rock stars' young, wild and free moment. For the overseas audience, just have a try on my today's recommendation and pls give oriental artists more respect and support. It is true that melodic rock is very rare on today's music scene in Taiwan.
This album is a compilation, featuring 10 songs performed by the outstanding artists on the national music competition. All the artists on the music competition were the young talents, playing pop rock, aor, arena rock, hard rock and heavy metal. Because they were young with most of the artists in their early twenties, so this compilation album is entitled "The Flaming Youth", released in 1988. Actually, there is only a Chinese title of the album "烈火青春”, but here I just want more overseas audience to understand what the theme of the album is.
Here the song is called "We Want The Rock", which is its original English title. All the ten songs are sung in Mandarin, English and Cantonese respectively by the young artists mainly from Taiwan plus one Hong Kong talent. Different from the rest songs, "We Want The Rock" was performed by various artists as they stood together to sing this melodic rock masterpiece.
This song is sung by both boys and girls, who came from various bands. In history, the formation of rock n roll bands in Taiwan and Hong Kong came out much earlier than the late 1980s when this album was released, but the development of rock music in the two countries underwent many difficulties in history because of the social background.
The album was released by a famous local label UFO Group. Loyal music lovers from Taiwan and Hong Kong must know how famous the label was, which is now defunct. During the 1980s and the early to mid 1990s, UFO Group signed numerous artists from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and released numerous epic albums with numerous great hits in mandarin record market.
Except for the accent from the song by Taiwanese singers, the full-length album was well created and well produced. In UFO Group, there were the top-class songwriting team and producing team, consisting of the monumental music legends in Taiwan music industry. For some album collectors, its cassette releasing always carries a sense of nostalgia.
Besides, the album features the first-level players on each track. Just hear the brilliant guitar works which penetrate the full-length of the song "We Want The Rock". Five outstanding bands recorded the song and performed their own song for this album. Among all the five bands, some singers later became the notable roles on the Taiwan music scene.
In this compilation, the bands included Metal Kids, Telepahy, The Outsider, Heavy Chains (1980s all-female band) and The Vision. All the bands now have become the names of the past. Actually, these bands were all short-lived and less-known for today's young generation in Taiwan and some of the bands only exsisted on the national music competition and sang in this memorable compilation. So this compilation was the first step, making the young talents known by the public. Three fronted young men later became the music legends as the solo musicians and the frontman in his new band. They are Tom Chang (R.I.P.) from Metal Kids, the late great singer & songwriter; Jack Yao from Telepathy, the frontman of Taiwan aor band Oriental Express and Samuel Tai from The Vision, HK-born legendary singer.
The album's theme title song "The Flaming Youth" featured three boys & one girl on vocals, sung in mandarin. The three boys later became the music legends as I just mentioned. The girl was not a prolific singer, whose name gradually faded out of people's mind since the 21st century, but when speaking of female rock in Taiwan, she is the everlasting icon, who is never forgotten by 1980s rock fans.
