Ukraine has accused Russia of bombing a children’s hospital in the besieged port of Mariupol on Wednesday, during an agreed ceasefire to allow civilians trapped in the city to escape.

Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy called the attack on the hospital an “atrocity” and said people, including children, were trapped underneath the wreckage.

Russia had said it would hold fire to let thousands of civilians flee Mariupol and other besieged cities on Wednesday. But the city council said the hospital was hit several times by air strikes.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the attack was “horrific” and called out what she said was “the barbaric use of military force to go after innocent civilians in a sovereign country.”

Asked for comment, a Kremlin spokesperson told Reuters “Russian forces do not fire on civilian targets.”
