Hot on the heels of the GTI, GTD and GTE comes this: the all-new Volkswagen Golf R. While the Golf is in its eighth-generation, this is only the second R hatchback to come from the German car giant. The original was hugely popular, offering all the practicality and refinement of a hatchback and throwing in a near-300bhp engine coupled to a four-wheel drive system.
It was blisteringly quick but the original R was a bit of a blunt instrument. Very fast in a straight line but not all that much fun in the corners. The new R, however, is meant to be a bit more exciting. Not only does it have more power than an Audi S3 (316bhp to be precise), but it's now easier to drift. We find out if that's true, even though our test car doesn't have drift mode, and see if the new R is as fun to drive as its looks suggest.
