Pawpaw produce the largest fruit NATIVE to North America. Pawpaw, Asimina triloba is also spelled, Paw Paw. The fruit’s texture is like custard, and the fruit has tropical aroma and flavors. Growing Pawpaw from seed is easy.
BACKYARD GARDENERS’ METHOD
My method is for backyard gardeners. I sow seeds directly into the soil after eating the fruit. BUT, you can use my method with purchased seeds.
My method saves time. Not all seeds germinate. If and when Pawpaw seeds germinate, I either transplant them to a new location (Jan-March) or pot them in early Spring or late Fall. A video on transplanting is on its way – please subscribe!

GRAFTING?
If you WILL graft to the seedling, then use any seed (seeds from wild fruit or from a known variety).
If you will NOT graft to the seedling, then use seeds from a known variety.
How to grow Pawpaw tree from seed?
1. Gather fresh Pawpaw and harvest the seed (see above about GRAFTING) or use purchased seeds.
2. Remove the membrane that’s around the Pawpaw seed. For a few seeds, do it with your mouth. There are ways to do it at scale.
3. Don’t let seeds dry out (or roll-up seeds in a moist paper towel).
4. Sow seeds in a SHADY location, 1” to 2” deep. I do 2”. Most of these will germinate next year. Sow seeds into rich, organic soil.
*** Sowing seeds directly into the ground will stratify the seeds. The seed will experience the necessary cold temps. If they germinate then great; if not, I didn’t waste time potting, watering & caring for it. Transplanting seedling Pawpaw to pots or another location is another vid. Pawpaw have long tap roots so dig deep when transplanting! I’ve had no issues digging-up seedlings and potting them, or transplanting them in early spring.
