"The idea with the extension is to sort of build on what we've already achieved here and also to link into some of the national initiatives to create a greater marine protected area, which is being lead by the Cambodian government. So we see ourselves as sort of providing an example of the way you can proceed with a marine conservation and in particular we like the idea of linking our marine work with our community engagement work because we see those things as being integral. And we sort of have what we call a ridge-to-reef approach because because in the end, what happens on your ridge line will effect the health and wellbeing of your coral reefs."

"There's less fishing pressure on the area in general because we are further away from some more, like the bulk of the fishing boats that are based on the mainland. And like I said, there's a lot less pollution because there's smaller populations and there's no sort of heavy business or large scale business, so it's therefore a lot more, in a way pristine ecosystem to start with and that's what we're trying to maintain and that's what the whole point of this protected area is, to keep it in a healthy state."

"In terms of conservation, when we set up the original two hundred metre marine reserve around Song Saa, this community saw a big increase in the quantity of fishing products they could harvest from the sea. So now that the marine reserve is being hugely extended we hope to see a further increase in the size of the catch so that the incomes of the local people can be increased even more."
