A few days ago, seemingly unprovoked, Marjorie Taylor Greene decided to get on social media and put out a post about the ages of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, which she pointed out that, uh, most of them were under the age of 35. Here's the post that green put on social media. The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 was 44 years old, but more than a dozen were 35 or younger. Thomas Jefferson, 33, John Hancock, 39, James Madison, 25, Alexander Hamilton, 21 James Monroe 18, Aaron Burr 20, Paul Revere 41, George Washington 44, and that's it, right? That was the extent of the post. There's no additional context given as to why she decided to randomly put out this little factoid, but she got it wrong. And I'm not saying that the ages are wrong. What she got wrong was that out of the eight people she mentioned, only two of them actually signed the Declaration of Independence.
The other six were not signers of the Declaration of Independence like she had claimed. So here's what gets me about this. First and foremost, again, there was no reason to even put this out there, right? It's not like we were having a, a broad nationwide discussion about the ages of the founding fathers when they signed the Declaration of Independence. Like that wasn't a thing that happened this weekend. So she just was sitting there this weekend, pops in her head, Hey, what if I did this? And I promise you, and here's where it gets real stupid. She had to look these ages up, right? There's probably only a few people in this country that can rattle off the top of their head the ages of the people when they sign the Declaration of Independence. I have no doubt there's people that can do it, but most of us, I mean, come on, that's really not a, a little factoid we need to walk around having in our brains.
So Green had to have looked these up and in her process or the staffers process, whoever pulled this information for her, I seriously doubt she did it. But whoever took the time to look this information up didn't bother to take that extra step to even make sure if these people signed the Declaration of Independence, like an additional 10 to 15 seconds per person, right? And you only had eight people. So we're talking about a minute and a half, two minutes max to find out if these people actually signed it while you're sitting there looking at their bios and getting their ages. But you couldn't even do that because you have such disrespect for people that you completely disregard what's real and what's not. Now, of course, there was immediately a fact check posted on her tweet that said, James Madison,
Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, Aaron Burr, Paul Revere, and George Washington were not signers of the Declaration of Independence. And then a bunch of people on social media started making fun of her, humiliating her. But one of them said this, keep in mind ladies and gentlemen, that Marjorie Taylor agreed is a US representative whose salary is paid for by taxpayers. Stop electing stupid people. And that's really what's at the heart of this, right? As I said, there was no reason for her to post this. There was even less reason for her to get it wrong. 'cause I know she has internet access because she posted it on social media. You gotta have internet for that. You could have just checked it real quick and you didn't because you're dumb. And we need to get dumb people out of politics. I'm not saying that we need to go start recruiting new candidates at the MENSA meetings, but can we at least have people that know how to fact check things? Can we at least have people who understand how to do a very simple Google search? People that aren't so bold with their stupidity like Marjorie Taylor Greene is, I don't think that's too much to ask for American politics, but given the caliber of people we've got in Washington DC today, I guess maybe it is too much to say we need people that are a little bit smarter.
