Summary: Ancient conceptions of race and ethnicity were much studied in the classical education that was standard in 19th- and 20th-century America. This talk explores the myriad ways that such ideas were resurrected and manipulated as a ‘science of man’ that could justify slavery, eugenics, and white supremacism.
