Elizabeth Coon, MD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, comments on the association between blood pressure and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs). Increased blood pressure may result in lower white matter integrity and an analysis of a patient cohort revealed women to be more susceptible to WMHs as a result of increased variations in blood pressure. Dr Coon additionally emphasizes the need for further research, where females tend to suffer from falls and changes in gait.
