The BTR-80 is an 8×8 amphibious armored personnel carrier that has been in service with the Russian military since the mid-1980s. Over the years, several variants of the BTR-80 have been developed to enhance its capabilities.
• BTR-80: The original version introduced in 1986 equipped with a KPVT 14.5-mm machine gun and PKT 7.62 mm machine gun in the turret. It had a 260 horsepower engine and carried up to 8 soldiers.
• BTR-80A: Introduced in 1990 is an upgraded version of the BTR-80 that includes improved armor protection and a 2A72 30 mm gun as the primary weapon.
• BTR-80K: Introduced in 1995 is a command variant of the BTR-80 that has additional communications equipment and a map board for commanders.
• BTR-82A: Introduced in 2005 is an upgraded version of the BTR-80 with a more powerful 300 hp engine, advanced electronics, and a remotely-operated weapon station with 2A72 30 mm automatic cannon.
• BTR-80M: Introduced in 2011 is an upgraded version of the BTR-80 that features a new turret with a 30mm automatic cannon, improved armor protection, and other upgrades.
• BTR-82AM: Introduced in 2014 is an upgraded version of the BTR-82A with additional armor protection, and a new fire control system.
• BTR-87: Introduced in 2017 is a newer variant of the BTR-82A with a new hull design and a revised layout with engine compartment at the front and troop compartment at the rear. Troops can enter and leave the vehicle via rear entry doors or roof hatches rather than awkward side doors of the BTR-80 series. It is armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon, 7.62 mm machine gun and with either 4 Kornet-M or 2 Ataka-T anti-tank missile launchers.
