Overview of the standard Digi-Gurdy, a MIDI Hurdy Gurdy.
A low-cost MIDI version of a Hurdy Gurdy.
Hurdy Gurdys are very expensive as they are complex and time consuming to build. I originally envisioned this as an ultra-portable compact MIDI Gurdy keybox that would easily fit into a bag. However I was challenged to also build a full sized version with crank handle. Here you get both options in the same instrument:
- Keybox can be undocked from sound box and will still function as a more portable device for lunchbreak practice etc.
- Crank simulates cranking of a real HG along with the buzz sound when you crank quickly.
Modes of use:
- USB MIDI to connected iPad, iPhone, PC or Android device, powered from the connected device.
- Also has standard 5 Pin MIDI socket into which a regular MIDI cable or Bluetooth MIDI transmitter can be plugged. Has internal power supply for use in this mode.
- Developed from my original DigiGurdy project (see my DigiGurdy playlist) in collaboration with Jaap Brand who designed the original laser cut Nerdy Gurdy.
- The Soundfont files used in the attached device, e.g. an iPad, are from a different open source project I am not involved with; the MIDI-Gurdy project: midigurdy.com
- Software recently completely re-written and much improved by Basil Lalli.
- Basic preset tunings offered via on-screen menu for beginners, however for advanced players, any tuning you wish to create is possible and they can be saved for future use.
