In this video, I'll show you how to play Makuta on 2 congas. I learned of this rhythm watching the incredible Conguero, Pedrito Martinez. Pedrito uses this rhythm a lot in his music.
Makuta is actually a tall cylindrical or barrel-shaped drum, which influenced the shape of the conga drum, as we know of today. Makuta also refers to the "dancing and rhythms associated with the Makuta drums". The Makuta drums are used in drumming ceremonies associated with the descendants of slaves brought to Cuba from Central Africa. Pretty interesting, right?! I thought so too!
This rhythm is fantastic and it definitely has a great groove and feel to it! Has a nice "bounce" and upbeat vibe! Hope you enjoy!
