Indonesia is launching Southeast Asia’s first high-speed rail service next year, with trains set to race up to 350 km per hour.From June 2023, the railway line will connect Indonesia's capital Jakarta with Bandung, the busy capital of West Java province.
Journey times between the two cities will be cut from three hours to about 40 minutes.The bullet train is largely funded under China’s Belt and Road (BRI) infrastructure initiative.This is an ambitious plan by the superpower to develop new trade routes with the rest of the world.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he hopes "the mobility of goods and people can be faster and improved, and our competitiveness will also be stronger."

The Jakarta-Bandung line
The 142.3-km railway, worth $7.8 billion, is being constructed by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China (PT KCIC), a joint venture between an Indonesian consortium of four state-owned companies and China Railway International. They will also be equipped with electric motors, each with a power of 625,000 watts.
It is equipped with an improved security system that has the ability to track earthquakes, floods, and other emergency conditions
Bilateral cooperation. This will help bolster Indonesia's economic development and deepen bilateral cooperation while promoting the high-quality development of the BRI.
It strengthens interconnection with China-Europe freight trains and builds a fast global transportation network. This will also enrich the development of infrastructure facilities and generate fresh growth points in both the services sector and trade in services between Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Taiwan-based commentator Lai Yueqian foresees that the HSR could extend north from Jakarta to Singapore, through Malaysia and Thailand, into China, and link up with China’s own HSR to become part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to Central Asia and beyond.

What Next?
The second phase, at a distance of 520 km, will extend the HSR from Bandung to Surabaya and will begin later in 2023.
Indonesia also plans to sign deals with foreign investors for the 188 trillion rupiah ($12 billion) expansion of the Jakarta MRT train system.
Funding would come from Japan, South Korea, and the UK, according to Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.

Jokowi said that the construction achievements will be presented to the world during the upcoming G20 Bali Summit, a symbol of cooperation between China and Indonesia.
