The European Union's foreign policy and security chief arrived in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday for talks with Lebanese leaders, less than a week after the ruling-majority bloc defeated the Hezbollah-led opposition in parliamentary elections.
Javier Solana had meetings with President Michel Suleiman and with Saad Hariri, the billionaire businessman and son of the murdered former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, who is emerging as the favourite to lead Lebanon's government after the election.
He also held talks with a key Hezbollah ally, former army chief Michel Aoun.
Solana is expected to hold separate talks on Saturday with Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and Hezbollah representative Hussein Hajj Hassan, an EU representative said.
The meeting will be the first between Solana and a Hezbollah member.
Earlier, Solana met Walid Jumblatt, Druze leader and head of the Progressive Socialist Party.
Solana's visit coincides with a trip by US envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell.
Mitchell arrived in the Lebanese capital earlier on Friday where he reiterated US President Barack Obama's commitment to pursuing peace in the region.
