(28 Apr 2019) A divided Spain is voting in its third general election in four years on Sunday, with all eyes on whether the rise of conservative nationalism will allow the right wing to unseat incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Sanchez, the Socialist party leader, was forced to call an early election when his minority government failed to pass a national spending bill in February.
Polls forecast that his Socialists will overtake the conservative Popular Party to garner the most votes - but it will be nowhere near a majority.
Sanchez has hinted that he could end up inviting far-left party United We Can (Podemos) to form a centre-left government like the one that rules Portugal.
There has also been speculation that the Socialists could move the other way toward the centre-right Citizens (Ciudadanos), but Sanchez says that option is "not in his plans".
