I’m out at Dungeness Beach for an afternoon of photography with the Fujifilm GFX 100s and the GF 45mm to explore the architecture of a land based fishing fleet. Simple sheds, repurposed containers and old truck bodies house large diesel engines, gearboxes and winch gear set up to haul fishing boats out of the water and safely home onto the beach.
Every one is different, even the containers, they have their own footprint, hand built or modified by their owners to do their job as efficiently as possible with the minimum of expense and fuss.
Manchester Liners was a shipping company founded in 1898. The line pioneered the regular passage of ocean-going ships along the Manchester Ship Canal.
Switching to container shipping in 1968 the company went into decline and eventually folded in 1985. The ships in their fleet were limited to a maximum length of 530 feet imposed by the Manchester Ship Canal's lock chambers, and could no longer compete economically with much larger vessels from other ports. So after a life of touring the world, this shipping container found its way to its resting place on Dungeness Beach, to be re-purposed as a Fishers hut / winding shed.
