IDITAROD ALASKA - 1000 MILE SLED DOG RACE!
The Iditarod race takes place in early March and is approximately 1000 miles in length. There is a northern trail and a southern trail that is rotated every year. Teams of Dogs are usually 12-16 in number so that dogs can be rotated on and off the leads during the long 8-15 day race to prevent too much fatigue. Mushers and their teams race thru blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and white out conditions to be involved and possibly for the chance to win this prestigious race. There are 26/27 checkpoints along the route where mushers must check in. Supplies (tools, food, dog booties, batteries, headlamps, radios) are flown in for the mushers and dogs at these points. Veterinarian check the dogs at these points to ensure their health and condition is not being compromised. The prize for winning the Iditarod is at least $50,000 and a new Pick up Truck. The top 30 finishers divide a purse usually averaging $600,000. The remaining 20 or so racers receive approximately $1500.
