It’s time to take your staining skills to the next level.
It’s time to Go Premium with Cabot.
This is how to apply a Cabot wood stain to your project.
By now, you’ve picked out your Cabot wood stain and have
appropriately prepped your wood.
So when should you start?
Make sure it’s a day with no rain for 24 hours before and after the application.
Also, avoid excessively hot days or times of the day when there’s direct sunlight hitting your project. The heat will effect the stain’s ability to penetrate or cure properly.
You’ll need some top-notch tools to begin.
For oil-based stains, choose a good-quality natural bristle staining brush. And for water-based or acrylic stains, you’ll need a premium polyester or nylon staining brush.
But for a faster finish, go with the Cabot Pad Applicator. You won’t regret it.
You’ll also need trim tools to expertly smooth out drips and to reach unstained areas in between boards.
One or more plastic drop cloths. Painters tape.
And you should wear rubber gloves and eye protection, as well as clothing you don’t mind ruining.
Alright, now let’s put these tools to good use.
First, cover the landscaping and concrete surrounding the deck. And tape off your siding, windows, or doors if needed.
For best results, make sure your boards are clean and dry when you start.
And remember to stir your stain occasionally throughout the process to maintain its rich, uniform color.
Always add a proper amount of stain to the applicator so you can apply an even, drip-free coat. Make sure you don’t overapply.
Stain small sections at a time—anywhere from one to three boards. Start at one end and follow through to the other end of the boards.
As you go, maintain a wet edge on the area where you are applying to avoid lap marks.
Check the label to see if the stain requires more than one even coat.
When finished, allow the stain to dry for 24 to 48 hours before moving furniture back onto the surface.
Now for a safe, responsible clean-up.
Clean your brushes appropriately as directed on the label.
Store all used rags by submerging them in water.
And dispose of empty cans or unused portions in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
That’s how you apply a wood stain by Cabot: Trusted by pros for over 140 years.
