At the beginning of our courses we frequently ask our participants why they take part in our Maitland courses. A reason that is often mentioned is that they want to gain more structure during their examination and their overall treatment approach.
Besides a good documentation of what is said and done, a reflective clinical reasoning process seems like the most powerful tool we have to keep structured during our interaction with the patient.
The term „Clinical Reasoning“ describes the process in which a therapist is developing and testing hypothesis, while collecting information during the interaction with a patient. The goal is to establish a clinical diagnosis and a treatment approach fitting to this diagnose.
In the video Pieter shows one of the most common ways of clinical reasoning: the hypothetic-deductive reasoning. With an example from a course patient, he openly explains step by step his thoughts and his clinical reasoning to this patient. He also adds his thoughts on planning the next visit from that patient.
